These terms apply to Leo, Leo Events and leo.africa, which are provided by Jenga Systems Ltd of Nairobi, Kenya (“we”, “us”). By using them you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use them.
The services
Leo brings together news, market prices, radio, podcasts and video from across Africa. Leo Events lists events published by ticket sellers and organisers. Both apps are free to download and to use. We may change, add or remove features, and we may stop offering a service; where we can, we will tell you in advance.
Accounts
You don’t need an account to read, listen or browse. If you create a Leo account:
- give an email address that is yours, and keep your password to yourself;
- you must be 18 or over;
- you are responsible for what is done with your account.
You can delete your account at any time.
Using the apps fairly
Please don’t:
- copy, scrape or resell the apps’ content or data in bulk, or reach our servers by automated means beyond ordinary use of the apps;
- try to get around security, fair-use limits or daily allowances;
- interfere with the apps or the servers behind them;
- use the apps to break the law or to infringe anyone’s rights.
News and other content belongs to its owners
The stories, pictures, audio, video and event listings in the apps belong to the newsrooms, broadcasters, podcasters, organisers and sellers who published them. Leo names the publisher of each item and links to the original. You may read, watch and listen for your own personal use; anything more needs the owner’s permission.
If you own content that appears in Leo and want it corrected or removed, see Media partners and sources or write to info@leo.africa.
The apps, their design, their software and the Leo name belong to Jenga Systems Ltd.
Parts written by software
Some parts of Leo are written automatically by a large language model (Anthropic’s Claude), from the news and prices Leo has collected, without a person reviewing each one before you see it:
- Ask Leo’s answers;
- the morning brief, the midday pulse and the daily close;
- exchange snapshots and country briefs;
- notes on why a price moved;
- the names given to story threads;
- the daily quiz.
In addition, the tone mark beside a headline, the mood of the day and the topics a story is filed under are assigned automatically by machine-learning models.
These parts can be wrong or incomplete. They are not the words of the newsrooms they draw on, and they are not advice. Check the sources they cite before you rely on them.
Not financial advice
Market data in Leo comes from the exchanges and from market-data publishers. Most prices are end-of-day closes, refreshed during market hours where the source allows; some feeds are delayed; the app labels each one. Prices can be late or wrong.
Nothing in Leo — including Ask Leo’s answers, the briefs, the signals and the notes on why a price moved — is investment, financial, legal or tax advice, or a recommendation to buy or sell anything. Make your own decisions and, where it matters, take professional advice.
Events and tickets
Leo Events lists events published on ticket sellers’ and organisers’ sites. We don’t organise events, sell tickets or handle payments, and we take no cut. When you buy a ticket, your contract is with the seller or the organiser, under their terms: refunds, cancellations and changes are theirs to handle. Listings can be wrong or out of date — dates, prices and venues change — so check with the seller before you go. A price shown is the organiser’s listed minimum.
Maps
Leo Events includes Google Maps features and content. Use of Google Maps features and content is subject to the then-current versions of the Google Maps/Google Earth Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy. On iPhone, maps are provided by Apple.
Paid features
Some features may be offered as a paid subscription, Leo Pro. Leo Pro is not on sale yet. When it is, it will be sold through the app store you downloaded Leo from, at the price shown before you pay; the store’s terms govern billing, renewal, cancellation and refunds, and you manage the subscription in your store account. Paid features will never include the news itself.
Other sites
Newsrooms’ pages, broadcasters’ streams and sellers’ sites that open from the apps are run by them, not us. We’re not responsible for their content, products or privacy practices.
Our responsibility
We work to keep the apps running and their information current, but we provide them as they are and as available, without promising that they are accurate, complete or fit for a particular purpose, to the extent the law allows.
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, for losses from relying on information in the apps, from events or tickets you buy from others, or from other sites. Nothing in these terms limits a liability that the law, including Kenya’s Consumer Protection Act, 2012, does not allow us to limit.
Ending use
You can stop using the apps at any time and delete your account. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of Kenya, and the courts of Kenya deal with any dispute about them. This doesn’t take away any right you have as a consumer to bring a claim where you live.
Changes to these terms
When these terms change, we update the date at the top of this page. If you keep using the apps after a change, the new terms apply.
